The summer was nearly over and Peter and I haven’t managed to get away for a real holiday by the sea again. But there are couple of bank holidays in Slovakia at the end of August and beginning of September, so we thought – why not make the most of it? Croatia is often called the „Slovak sea“ in Slovakia, because it’s the closest seaside to our country and many Slovaks spend their summer holiday there. But even though it became a bit „common“ in the past 10 or so years, I still view Croatia as one of the most beautiful coastal countries. Even though it’s so close to us, it still feels exotic and whenever I’m here, I feel like coming into a different world. Everything is suddenly brighter, happier, more calm and relaxed…
So a few days before our planned departure I booked an Airbnb apartment in Lovran, just because it looked nice in Google pictures (I’ve never been in this part of Croatia before) and we got a lovely MINI Clubman from BMW Slovensko for the trip. Since MINIs have always been my secret love, I was very excited to drive one to our holiday destination this year. My Peter keeps saying MINI coopers are for girls, so he let me drive all the way 😀 I was especially happy about the big trunk of the Clubman, which allowed us to take anything we wanted with us. And since this was our first real, although short, holiday in years, I wanted to take everything – I literally took about half of my wardrobe with me! And I ended up wearing 4 pieces of clothing in the end: bikini, beach tunic, skirt and top for the evening 🙂 We easily fitted our huge zebra suitcase, numerous bags, sun loungers and two inflatable water beds into the car. We even carried the inflatables fully inflated every day to the beach and back, as we had plenty of room for them.
Since this was our first holiday by the sea in a long time, I wanted to do something special and fun. So I finally used my Mermaid Schwarzkopf Blond Me pastel colour spray and turned myself into a modern mermaid 😀 You probably can’t see the turquoise pastel hue in my hair in every picture, but it’s definitely there. It even stays in my hair for so long that I still have a blue/green hue even now 😀 Such fun (as Miranda’s Mum would say!)
As we were driving though Austria and Slovenia, I grew more and more excited the closer we were to the coast. Slovenian villages were gradually starting to look more exotic with hacienda-style houses overgrown by blooming flowers and palm trees, and then we crossed the border and arrived on a hill above Opatija. Every time I see the sea it’s like I’m seeing it for the first time, I’m so happy. We drove through picturesque seaside towns on the foot of the green hills, overlooking the perfectly blue bays and rocky beaches. We fell in love with Lovran at first sight. It’s a cute, historical, elegant coastal town with a small port and several public beaches set in a bay, covered by pine trees. There are dozens of little „secret“ beaches hidden between the rocks on the coast, where you can walk for hours, enjoying the view from a beautiful promenade. Although we stayed for only 5 days, we enjoyed every second of doing sweet nothing by the sea or letting the soft waves of Adriatic rock us on the water. The sea in Lovran is crystal-clear and its beauty is really difficult to capture in any photos. But you know me, I tried anyway 🙂
Next stop on our MINI Adriatic tour was my favourite Trieste, which I fell in love with last Autumn and I wanted to show to my boyfriend. I’ll show you more in my next post, so stay tuned.
